The presence and persistence in the bloodstream of disease-causing bacteria. If the bacteria are not destroyed with the administration of an appropriate antibiotic, they can multiply and cause a massive infection of the body (systemic infection), possibly leading to death.

The signs and symptoms of septicemia include prostration, high fever, and sometimes, the formation of pustules and abscesses.
