In football especially, a group of players consisting of third- or fourth-string reserves, with no hope of ever playing in a game, that mimcs an opponent's plays and formations during practice for the starters. Technically part of the team, but will never see the stadium lights or an opposing team's jersey battling them, except perhaps at the end of a violent RUTSing.
