Phrase used in the English Midlands meaning to go to enormous lengths to do something simple. e.g. searching for a item in a book but not using the index. The name derives from a large hill in Shropshire that sticks up from the plain in an intrusive manner, rather like Ayers rock. To go around the hill requires a large detour.
