Ononis spinosa

Also known as cammock, petty whin and stayplough. This is a perennial shrub found quite commonly in the meadows and pastures of Europe. It is also sometimes cultivated in the United States. Deep sinuous roots produce spiny, branched stems which can grow to heights of 1 to 2 feet. The plant grows serrated leaflets and butterfly-shaped flowers. These blooms are rose-coloured or purple and appear from June to August. The fruit of the plant is an ovate hairy pod.

Rest-harrow roots are aperient and diuretic. Primarily used for it's diuretic properties, this herb works well without causing negative side-effects. Also good for water retention, it is recommended for use by people susceptible to gravel and stones. Rest-harrow is also sometimes used for urinary catarrh, kidney inflammation and rheumatism. A decoction may be used externally for eczema, itching and other skin conditions.

Rest"-har`row (-h?r`r?), n. Bot.
