Automotive; refers to the maximum speed at which an engine can operate properly. It is so called because it is generally indicated by a red line/area on a vehicle's tachometer. Past the redline, an engine may fail for one of several reasons: valve float, crankshaft failure (or bearing failure], oil depravation, connecting rod failure, or countless other reasons.
