ramp up

To gradually increase cost, effort, sales, staffing, or production. (From manufacturing- where a small initial run may be used to test product quality, and then after approvals, production is ramped up to desired levels). In this sense it is a transitive verb, but informally it can be intransitive, meaning "To apply greater internal effort," e.g. I've got to ramp up if I want to pass my exams."
