Radiofrequency catheter ablation is done for people with
life-threatening tachycardias. This is done with several
catheters in the heart. One is positioned directly over the area that causes the
tachycardia. The tip of the catheter is then heated and that small area of the heart is altered so that the
electrical current won't pass through the
tissue. Usually the
Intracardia Electrophysiological Procedure is done before this one to locate the area that's causing the tachycardia. On some occasions instead of this procedure a
surgery is done in place of it to interrupt the
abnormal connection in the heart. These
treatments may eliminate the tachycardia permanently. But it is usually not recommended unless the tachycardia becomes an extremely
severe problem.
