Queen Mother

The widow of a king, a former queen consort who is the mother of the currently reigning king or queen. This term may have been created by (and was definitely popularized by) Elizabeth, the widow of King George VI of England and mother of Queen Elizabeth II, who did not like the older term "dowager queen."
