Terrorist organisation created following a split in the IRA at the start of the current Northern Ireland troubles. The Provisionals ("Provos"), under a Belfast leadership, quickly became the mainstream of violent republicanism - the organisation most people know as the IRA are the Provisional IRA. The Official IRA (the "stickies"), under a Dublin leadership, ceased operations thereafter.
