This term is more commonly used today than its synonym, proterandrous, also defined by Webster 1913. Protandry refers to the phenomenon in which an organism is first functionally male, then becomes female. This term is commonly used to refer to plants whose flowers first produce pollen, then become receptive to being pollinated.
