The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Cream were the original icons - guitar/bass/drums, blues-based, with long improvisations; variations can include the trio as a subset, e.g. Live at Leeds-era Who, Van Halen, Metallica, etc. Usually results in the _____ is God Syndrome, be it Eric Clapton (whose "deity" actually pre-dated Cream), Edward Van Halen, or Yngwie Malmsteen.
