Two or more rhythmical patterns with different metrics (3/4 against 7/4 for instance) being played simultaneously, creating apparently more complex musical structures, where the different patterns don't "join" at the regular bars.

Interesting examples of this effect can be heard in Javanese gamelan music, and in the work of modern artists such as Meshuggah, King Crimson and Steve Reich.
