An item of footwear that has much more than the necessary thickness of the sole.

Usually worn only by females, but from time to time also by males, though oftern with not as high of platform soles on them.

Common thicknesses are from a half-inch to two inches, though some have been made in extremely large sizes (6 inches or more). I find it hard to imagine how tough it must be to walk on them.

Stupid fashion idea (redundant). As soon as stiletto heels went out, we had to find another method of crippling women, so we dredged these up. Moderate platforms can be fairly comfy, to be sure, but serious ones are uncomfortable and dangerous, as witness several deaths in Japan and other places. They also make driving difficult. Worn mostly by girls (sorry, no women) who can't bear to think for themselves. Or who have serious height-related inferiority complexes.
