The stripes on pinstripe fabric. Pinstripes are very thin (about the width of a pin, hence the name) vertical stripes of very light color on a darker background, although sometimes they may be rotated horizontally for a striking contrast (as in the 1998 movie "The Avengers").

Pinstripe suits were broadly popular in the 1930s and are sometimes synonymous with swing-era fashion.
