phreatic (also called steam-blast) eruptions occur when cold ground or surface water comes into contact with hot rock or magma resulting in a usually weak explosion resulting from explanding steam. no new magma is ejected, only preexisting solid rock from the volcanic conduit. if fresh magma is ejected, the eruption is called a phreatomagmatic eruption.
