In theater, and particularly in Opera, a female performer portraying the character of a male role is said to be in a pants or trousers role.

Well known pants roles include Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro, Count Orloff in Der Fledermaus and the Composer in Ariadne auf Naxos.
