A gemstone in the corundum family, one of the rarest on earth. It is generally orange with red, pink, yellow or peach overtones. The stones officially classified as padparadscha are only found in Sri Lanka; similar corundums which are considered to really be sapphires have been found in Tanzania. A one-carat padparadscha can cost $15,000 U.S. dollars.
