In bridge bidding a bid made by an opponent of the player who made the opening bid. An overcall can be the beginning of a competitive auction in which both sides are trying to bid a contract, or merely a shift of the bidding from one partnership to the other, or it can amount to nothing at all if that side does not make any further bids.
