Electrical engineering term to denote electrical isolation by optics, where, instead of electrical current flowing through a logic gate, a light beam travels accross a small glass tube to activate a corresponding electrical signal. In this manner, the electrical current which flows through the logic gate can never destroy the components, as it is isolated from the component by a beam of light. An optoisolator shares the same polar characteristics as a diode.
