The option to "get out of" or to not participate in something. Usually used in situtations where an individual would like a company to stop doing something that the individual never gave the company permission to do in the first place.

Company PR representatives would say something like, "We give people the choice to opt-out of our severe beating about the head and neck service, so there is nothing wrong with providing this service to those who do not ask us not to provide it."

See DoubleClick and DoubleClick Master Database.

Frequently the advertising companies and other shady characters use the opt-out method to throw you on other lists because when you opt-out, you have proven that there exists a human reading email at that address. Thus you are a real live fleshy person and more valuable to them than an email address of unknown status.

Marketing is evil. Anyone who tries to convince you otherwise is a marketer.
