An "old saw" is something that used to be said a lot but would now be considered to be politically incorrect. Here's one from Harper's Bazaar, forerunner of Harper's Magazine dated Oct. 18, 1857: "A dog, a wife, and a walnut tree...the more you beat them, the better they be."
