Not just a black leather jacket or a jeans jacket, but an armored outer-skin that protects the motorcyclist from the nasty elements like rain, wind, sun, hail, and gravel.

Lots of people swear by leather, but I'm more fond of synthetic (kevlar-cordura blends) with foam/plastic inserts.
