Indications
Moderate to severe pain when opioid analgesia is needed.
Pharmacology
morphine sulfate is a direct agonist of the opiate receptors and blocks the transmission of pain signals to the brain.
Contraindications
Known opioid allergy, respiratory depression, severe or active asthma, paralytic ileus
Interactions
Alcohol, other CNS depressants, anticholinergics, tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, general anesthetics, skeletal muscle relaxants, cimetidine. Do not within two weeks of stopping MAOIs.
Adverse Reactions
Constipation, somnolence, GI upset, headache, edema, rash, sweating, infection, fever, dry mouth, insomnia, paresthesia, anorexia, depression, dyspnea, respiratory depression, orthostatic hypotension, syncope, euphoria.
