i've realized lately that there must be some very
insurmountable difficulty to preparing a
bagel with
cream cheese and
tomato. this is due in part to the fact that it's been some time since i did it myself and can't remember exactly how much
effort the operation required in order to be completed successfully. mostly, however, it is due to the
chronic inability of the people who work in the
deli to do a halfway decent job of it.
every day, i order my little bagel and watch, mouth agape, as without fail someone makes a complete mess of my
future meal. one boy takes the tiniest amount of cream cheese possible and scrapes it across the bagel, guaranteeing that
the tomato will not remain in place, but will slide off repeatedly when i try to eat it. one girl never listens when i tell her my order and always tries to hand the bagel back to me
sans tomato. and she likes to set one half of the bagel on top of the other, so that the half on top is covered with cream cheese on both sides, again resulting in
unnecessary messiness. and today, a gentleman whom i formerly respected decided that putting on both
gloves was too much trouble and instead proceeded to prepare the bagel using only one hand. he got
a big glop of cream cheese on half of the bagel, then slid the other half all over the counter trying to spread the cheese, distributing the
toppings of the bagel all over said surface. had i wanted a
plain bagel, i would certainly have taken one.
i'm
disappointed in these people, but i can sort of sympathize, as i'm growing increasingly
surly while at work and leave my desk as little as possible. maybe next time i'll ask if i can prepare the bagel myself, ensuring that it's done to my
exacting (but entirely reasonable) standards.
whomever did the softlinking.. being a proletariat is not an excuse for bein a dipshit. spreading cream cheese on a bagel is not difficult. working in food service is not an excuse for making the rest of the lower class look bad.
