moissanite

A crystal form of silicon carbide that has similar structure and properties to natural diamond. May be substituted for a real diamond as it costs a fraction of the price and is virtually indistinguishable by most jeweller's tests.

There have been cases of fraud where moissanite has been represented as diamond.
