A synonym for "cryptographic hash" used to describe algorithms such as MD5 or SHA that are used to compute a fingerprint of a message. Of course, their output does in no way provide a human (or otherwise) readable synopsis of the message, but for cryprographic identification or signing purposes, the "digest" can be used as a substitute for the message because of the one-way properties of such hash functions.
