The mesosphere is the third section of the atmosphere, above the stratosphere, and below the thermosphere. It goes from 31 miles above the earth's surface to about 56 miles. In the mesosphere, the temperature decreases with altitude. The atmosphere is at its coldest here, with a temperature of about -112ºF (-80ºC). This is where most meteors burn up.
