French word simply meaning "a mix," appropriated by Frank Herbert for the Spice's name. I.e., "The house's interior was a melange of styles, from spare Japanese spaces to English country manor" or "Loreena McKennitt's latest cd is a melange of Middle Eastern, Celtic and folk flavors.'
