Contrary to what it sounds like, this phrase did not originate in the theatre business. The word "props" comes from "proper respect". And everyone familiar with crappy modern slang knows "mad" is a synonym for a "whole assload". The modern usage of this phrase means you're giving someone all the proper respects due for some amazing feat, such as ripping the arm off of Grendel in hand-to-hand combat.
