macromolecule

A term coined in the early twentieth century to describe very large molecules. A macromolecule is a single covalently linked set of atoms that is large. Examples in biology are DNA, proteins and cellulose, a polymeric carbohydrate. Other, non-natural polymers such as Nylon are also considered macromolecules.
