I had always thought that calling a woman loose was a disparaging reference to her less-than-strict morals; my friend confessed that he thought the term arose from a promiscuous woman's loose or stretched vagina. I heard an alternative explanation recently: it's a 19th century term referring to a woman who abandoned her corsets. Like many derogatory terms for women, this one quickly took on a sexual connotation.
