loogthung (ลูกทุ่ง)

Loogthung is Thai country music with western instruments. Usually a singer or duo backed by a large band, and in performance, the obligatory dance troupe. Spurned by Bangkokians as being parochial and unsophisticated, now the most popular music in all Thailand. Though western instruments are used, loogthung is much more grass roots Thai music than its urban cousins, and despite lacking pretensions, often have far wittier lyrics.
