A longitudinal engine is an engine mounted in such a fashion that the alignment of the crank shaft is parallel to the length of the car. Typically an extended drive shaft connects to a differential at the rear of the car, where power is distributed to the rear wheels.

Compare with a transverse engine configuration, which in most cars will require less weight and less space in the car.
