In a steam engine, such as a steam locomotive, "live" steam is steam at boiler pressure (commonly 180 to 350 pounds per square inch on a modern locomotive). This steam is "live" because it can be used for useful work, such as powering the train. Contrast with exhaust steam, from the wrong side of the cylinders; this has far fewer uses.
