Listserve-of-Death is an old revenge tactic. When you wanted to create havoc for someone without mailbombing them (and losing your ISP in the process), you could sign the target up for a few hundred automated list servers. There were actually programs created that automated the process. When the target went to check their email, the mailbox would be full of random crap.
