A popular (at the time) theory of the Nazis was that Germany needed to expand to provide adequate Lebensraum for all the ethnic Germans in Europe (not just the ones in Germany). This was to be accomplished, for the most part, at the expense of Poland, the Soviet Union, and the rest of central and eastern Europe.
