Lava domes usually occur within the craters or on the flanks of large composite volcanoes when viscous lava flows erupt from the vent but are too thick and viscous to flow any great distance. As more eruptions occur, the dome expands from within. the outer surface repeatedly cools and hardens which spills loose fragments down the side of the dome.
