A rope, ideally with handles on each end, that you either:
  1. hold in one's own hands and whirl it over your head and under your feet while jumping whenever it would otherwise smack you in the calf, or:
  2. Get two other people to stand on either side of you and whirl it while you jump over it.
Often accompanied by jump rope rhymes when children do it.
