One of the primary metrics by which a hard-sf story may be judged. This says that an author can do nearly anything she wants to so long as she doesn't contradict herself.

For example, it's perfectly fine to give your world the ability to travel faster than light. It's not ok to then have a crucial plot point depend on communications being limited to the speed of light.
