The practice of Huskanoy, a term borrowed from Virginia Native Americans, involved subjecting an initiate to tribal ceremonies that included severe physical ordeals and rigorous colonic irrigations. In 1788, Thomas Jefferson wrote of someone who looked "so much out of his element that he has the air of someone huskanoyed."
