How much is that doggie in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I must take a trip to California
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If he has a dog, he won't be lonesome
And the doggie will have a good home

How much is that doggie in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie's for sale

I read in the papers there are robbers
With flashlights that shine in the dark
My love needs a doggie to protect him
And scare them away with one bark

How much is that doggie in the window?
The one with the waggly tail
How much is that doggie in the window?
I do hope that doggie's for sale

A few days ago I was having an argument with a friend of mine about this very song. I claimed that it was about a dog in a pet shop window, while he (foolishly) claimed it was about a dog simply in the window of a house.

'Now', I thought to myself, 'how to resolve this?'. And then it struck me. So I gleefully went off to the nearest computer and went to find the song on E2 just to find that only the first verse was here, which really didn't clear it up (I think we could remember that one anyway). As it happens, the full song doesn't really clear it up either.

Anyway, all that is just to explain why I'm noding this. It's all immaterial in the end, as I was right and he was wrong, which is as it should be.
This is a children’s song used as a kind of gleeful filibuster to wear parents down in to buying a dog or other pet. There are not set verses and it's easy and fun to make up your own.( though now pottedstu tells me a version of the song was written by Bob Merrill 1924-1928)

How much is that doggy in the window? (woof, woof)
The one with the wiggly tail.
How much is that doggy in the window? (woof, woof)
I do hope that doggy's for sale!

How much is that Kitty in the window? (meow)
The one that purrs so so sweet
How much is that Kitty in the window? (meow)
I do hope that Kitty's for sale!

How much is that Bunny in the window? (hop)
The one that goes hip-ity-hop
How much is that Bunny in the window? (hop)
I do hope that Bunny is for sale!

I must take a trip to California (or insert place of your choice)
And leave my poor sweetheart alone
If he has no dog he'll be lonesome
And the doggy won't have a good home
