Homo is the genera, the first sapiens is the species, and the second is the subspecies. The other well-known kind of us is Homo sapiens neandertal, which died out about 12,000 years ago I think. 40,000 years ago we were archaic Homo sapiens and actually looked a little different than we do today. Anthropologists and biologists do consider them separate from Homo sapiens, in the sense that we are a subspecies of H.s.
