The High Renaissance was a cultural movement in 16th century Europe that signified the return to classical ideals of art and elevated conception (religious motif). The geographical centre of this movement was Italy. Italy was in a time of great political turmoil, with invasions and occupation in the north by the French and the Papalcy’s constant struggle to extend its temporal power. Yet, even in this time of great unrest, one of the most significant periods in culture, and in particular, art, came to be. Artists of this time were concerned primarily with mans effect on the world resulting the human figure becoming more lifelike and typical biblical scenes, most commonly found in art in previous ages, taking on a more humanistic theme. Stories were now told from a human point of view. The most famous artists of the time were Michelangelo Buonarotti, Raphael Sanzio and Leonardo Da Vinci
