The "heat of fusion" is the amount of energy required to turn a substance from the solid state to the liquid state without changing its temperature. For example, it requires 334 Joules of energy to convert 1 gram of ice at 0 degrees Celsius to 1 gram of liquid water at 0 degrees Celsius.
