She purchased him
piece by piece (although
one or two seemed
missing, or maybe more
simply, the parts list was
just out-of-date) by
selling her love on
the cheap and telling
herself (to exhaustion) that
he really was quite a
handsome fellow (but
who can really say if
a man is handsome? Certainly
not women, and probably
not men either) but hard-
working too (or at least
he would be once
she got her chance). She
should have gone instead
with store credit. At
least that way, she could
always have defaulted
on her debts (or
otherwise been bailed
out by Daddy) and
preserved her precious
capital
rather than
winding up broke (n hearted)
with nothing to show
for her pain but
a layabout purchased
on layaway.
