Gunboat Diplomacy

(idea) by Richard Fri Jun 09 2000 at 3:02:05
The application of military coercion in diplomacy.

Typical examples might include the Opium War, the United States Navy's exercises off the Libyan coast in the mid-1980s, and just about everything done in the Middle-East since 70CE.

The term is somewhat derogatory or contemptuous. The belief is that diplomacy is best effected by peaceful dialogue.
