A popular Thai dish which originated in the northeast of Thailand but is now found throughout the kingdom. It's known in the Thai language as som tam, and in Thai English (Thenglish) as papaya pok pok. (Find out why here) Very good served with sticky rice and grilled chicken, or with coconut jasmine rice. It can be very spicy indeed when served by street vendors in Thailand: you have been warned. Many farang confuse green papaya salad with green mango salad, for obvious reasons, but although they share many of the same ingredients, the two dishes taste quite different, illustrating perfectly Thai culinary genius.
