The second wave of American garage bands, drawing inspiration from various sources: The Yardbirds, The Who, The Byrds, The Kinks, surf music, and soul music... maybe there was some endorphin-hacking involved as well; band name fodder may have originated here. Much of this music has been immortalized on compilation LPs and CDs - a good thing, since many of these bands didn't get around to recording an album, much less release a Greatest Hits collection. Various obscure and less obscure found their way to a collection called Nuggets, compiled by Patti Smith Group co-founder Lenny Kaye (originally on Elektra, now on Rhino Records), its cult success led to other collections, like Pebbles and Wild Thing, and to an entire universe now of various artists garage compilations.
