In a centered optical system, the field stop is the diaphragm that defines the narrowest conical beam traveling through the system and having the center of the entrance pupil as its apex. Together with the aperture stop, the field stop defines the throughput of the system. The image of the field stop in the object domain is the entrance window. The image of the field stop in the image plane is the exit window.
