A style of
church governance where the church is part of a strict
hierarchy of
clergy who oversee and govern the church, usually headed up by a bishop. (The word episcopal is from the
greek word for
bishop.) The
Roman Catholic,
Anglican,
Orthodox, and
Methodist churches use this style of
polity.
